Olorgesailie Site

The World's Greatest Handaxe Factory

Located on the floor of the Great Rift Valley, Olorgesailie is globally renowned for the highest concentration of Acheulean handaxes ever discovered. This prehistoric site provides a unique window into the lives of our ancestors, particularly Homo erectus, who occupied this lakeside environment for over a million years. The accumulation of stone tools alongside the fossils of extinct mammals offers unparalleled evidence of early human behavior, tool-making evolution, and environmental adaptation.

The Acheulean Tradition

Early humans utilized the volcanic rocks of the area to craft sophisticated, symmetrical handaxes. These "Swiss Army knives" of the Stone Age were used for butchering large game, such as the extinct giant gelada baboon and prehistoric elephants, whose fossils remain visible at the site.

The Leakey Legacy

First excavated by Mary and Louis Leakey in the 1940s, Olorgesailie continues to be a focal point for the Smithsonian Institution. Recent findings have shifted our understanding of early human innovation, revealing the transition to the Middle Stone Age and the emergence of long-distance trade networks.
